The Hispanic/Latinx Affinity Group leads a cooking X Day to teach students how to make traditional Hispanic dishes and the history behind them.

Work Experience Program

In eleventh grade you’ll have the opportunity to try a career on for size.You might work alongside a lobbyist while legislature is in session, work with polymers and nanoparticles in a research lab, partner with a sound engineer at a local television station, or get an inside look at video game production (former WEP students have).Whatever your career aspiration, we’ll tap our far-reaching professional networks to help you secure a placement with a local company or organization aligned with your interests. You’ll get first-hand insight into the demands of a particular profession or industry, explore whether it might be the right fit for your future, and develop references and professional contacts to get you started on your path.

During my WEP, our Farming Discovery Term came and helped us plant some melons after deweeding the garden beds, fertilizing with asemite and adding topsoil. Two rows account for around 133 melon plants ranging in variety.

Aside from the immeasurable amount of financial knowledge I gained working with high level, successful investment bankers, the most memorable thing for me was the bond formed between my peers in the group I shared the experience with. I was able to make new connections with people I previously hadn’t, and furthered connections with a few friends I made during my exchange trip last year. Adjusting to the long office days in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan was much easier when you are doing it with friends.

Today I received my first tour with Dr. Damilola Joseph at WakeMed’s Children’s ED, in Raleigh. After receiving the tour I had the opportunity of witnessing, first-hand, the doctor-patient interactions as she observed and diagnosed children who were brought in.
Dr. Lola made sure to communicate to me that often times their job is not tell others what is wrong, but is instead to give reassurance towards what is normal.. Parents come to the children ER to make sure symptoms children are experiencing are not signs of anything of something serious.

Today at my first day of work experince shadowing Judge Walczyk I was able to observe three cases from civil court. I was able to absorb the critical thinking of the lawyers and all parties involed it was fascinating to observe cases in real life and understand how the judge and defendants and lawyers all interact with eachother.
